LVP vs. Hardwood: Mississippi Humidity FAQs

1. Which flooring is better for Mississippi's humid climate, LVP or hardwood?

For Mississippi's high humidity, Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is generally the superior choice. Its 100% waterproof core is inert to moisture changes, meaning it won't swell, warp, or cup like solid hardwood can. While engineered hardwood offers more stability than solid wood, LVP provides the ultimate peace of mind in our damp climate.

2. Can I install solid hardwood in my Rankin County home?

Yes, but it requires careful management of your home's internal environment. To prevent damage, you must maintain a consistent indoor humidity level year-round using your HVAC system and potentially a whole-home dehumidifier. Acclimatizing the wood properly before installation is also critical, a step we at Your Floor LLC take very seriously.

3. How does LVP mimic the look of real hardwood?

Modern LVP uses high-definition 3D printing technology to create a photographic image layer that is incredibly realistic. This layer captures the grain, knots, and texture of real wood species. Paired with embossed-in-register (EIR) texturing that matches the image, it's often difficult to tell the difference without close inspection.

4. What is the maintenance difference between LVP and hardwood in a place like Brandon or Florence, MS?

LVP is significantly lower maintenance. It's waterproof, so spills and mopping are not an issue. It's also highly scratch- and dent-resistant. Hardwood requires specific cleaners, is susceptible to water damage, and can scratch more easily. It may also need to be refinished every 7-10 years, a process LVP never requires.

5. Does engineered hardwood handle humidity better than solid hardwood?

Yes, significantly. Engineered hardwood is constructed with a multi-layer plywood core where the grain of each layer runs in a different direction. This cross-ply construction makes the plank far more dimensionally stable than a single piece of solid wood, resisting expansion and contraction from humidity changes much more effectively. It's an excellent compromise between the authenticity of real wood and the stability needed for our climate.
